The Stone Age Explained Simply
The Stone Age is by far the longest chapter of human history - it lasted more than 2.5 million years, while the entire Roman Empire, by comparison, existed for only about a thousand. It gets its name not from a landscape but from the most important material of the era: stone, which people shaped into tools and weapons long before they learned to work metals like bronze and iron. This way of sorting the past by tool material - stone, then bronze, then iron - is called the Three-Age System in archaeology.
Because 2.5 million years is an almost unimaginable span, historians and archaeologists split the Stone Age into three major phases: the Old Stone Age (Paleolithic), the Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic) and the New Stone Age (Neolithic). The boundaries are not the same everywhere in the world, because human groups in different regions developed at different speeds - the Neolithic ended much earlier in Mesopotamia, for instance, than in central Europe.
All dates are approximations - the further back an event lies, the harder it is to pin down precisely, and the transitions were gradual rather than sudden.
At the start of the Old Stone Age, early human species used simple, roughly chipped stone tools to scrape meat off bones or crush plants. Over many thousands of years the techniques grew steadily more refined, from carefully shaped hand-axes to small, sharp blades. Just as important as the tools was the controlled use of fire, which probably began several hundred thousand years ago: fire provided warmth and protection from predators, allowed meat to be cooked - which made food easier to digest and freed up more energy for the brain - and served as a social gathering point where groups could interact.
For a long stretch of time, two different human species lived side by side in Europe and the Near East: Homo sapiens, the modern human, and the Neanderthal, a separate, more heavily built human species with a larger brain volume that made tools, buried its dead, and probably even had spoken language. For a long time the popular image of the Neanderthal was a primitive "caveman," but modern research has corrected that picture considerably. About 40,000 years ago, Neanderthals disappeared as a distinct species - exactly why is still not fully settled, and researchers discuss several causes at once: climate change, competition for food with the numerically superior Homo sapiens, very small and scattered populations, or a gradual blending of the two groups.

Probably both! They shared the same regions for thousands of years, and DNA analysis today shows the two species also had children together. Almost everyone outside Africa still carries about 1 to 2 percent Neanderthal DNA.
How do we even know that so precisely, when it all happened so long ago?
Well-preserved bones sometimes still contain usable DNA! The Swedish researcher Svante Pääbo sequenced the Neanderthal genome and won the Nobel Prize for it in 2022 - thanks to his work, we now know much more precisely how closely Neanderthals and modern humans are related.
The biggest turning point of the entire Stone Age - some would say of all human history - came with the transition into the New Stone Age: the so-called Neolithic Revolution. Starting around 10,000 BCE, people in the "Fertile Crescent" (a region running roughly from Mesopotamia through the Levant into Egypt) began deliberately growing plants like wheat and barley and domesticating animals such as sheep, goats and later cattle, instead of only hunting and gathering. The word "revolution" is deliberate, even though the change unfolded over centuries: it altered practically every aspect of human life. Anyone who could store food became less dependent on the uncertainty of hunting, could settle permanently, and could build lasting settlements. Settled life, in turn, allowed women to have children more often and at shorter intervals, which drove significant population growth. Simple villages gradually grew into larger settlements with division of labor: not everyone had to gather food anymore - some became craftspeople, others took on religious or organizational roles - the beginning of social hierarchy.
Still, the Neolithic Revolution was by no means pure progress without a downside, and that point gets more emphasis in research today than it used to. Living in close quarters with domesticated animals encouraged new infectious diseases (so-called zoonoses) that jumped from animals to humans. Denser settlements made it easier for epidemics to spread. Stored surplus and land ownership also created, for the first time, the possibility that individuals or families could own significantly more than others - the Neolithic Revolution is therefore also regarded as the origin of social inequality. Some anthropologists even point out that many early farmers were worse nourished and worked longer hours than hunter-gatherers had before them. The shift was enormously important for the later development of cities, states and writing - but it was no unqualified blessing.
Another striking testament to the Stone Age is humanity's earliest known symbolic art: cave painting. In the Lascaux cave in France (discovered in 1940, its images roughly 17,000 years old) and at Altamira in Spain (discovered in 1879, with some paintings over 30,000 years old), Old Stone Age people left detailed depictions of horses, bison and other animals on cave walls. What exactly these images meant is still debated among researchers today: some suspect religious or magical hunting rituals, others see a kind of calendar or astronomical record, and others read them as purely artistic expression. What is certain is that these people were already capable of abstract thought, planning, and representing their world symbolically - a mental achievement that is often underestimated.
The Neolithic Revolution began around 12,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent and counts as one of the most far-reaching turning points in human history, because it produced permanent settlement, food storage, population growth and social inequality all at once. The term was coined by the Australian archaeologist V. Gordon Childe. Also remember: almost all people outside Africa carry 1-2 percent Neanderthal DNA - direct genetic evidence of interbreeding between two human species (Nobel Prize awarded to Svante Pääbo in 2022).
