Viruses Explained Simply
A virus is tiny - much smaller than a cell - and basically consists of just genetic material wrapped in a protein shell. The surprising part: viruses usually aren't considered "alive".

Why aren't viruses considered alive? They clearly do stuff!
A living thing can convert substances, grow, and reproduce on its own. A virus can't do any of that by itself - it has no metabolism of its own. Outside a cell, it's basically just a dead package of genetic material and protein.
So how does it multiply if it can't do that itself?
It docks onto a body cell and injects its genetic material inside. Then it basically hijacks the cell's factory: without realizing it, the cell manufactures thousands of new viruses until it eventually bursts and releases them.
And how does a vaccine help against that?
A vaccine shows your immune system harmless parts of the virus, like its docking proteins. Your body then practices making matching antibodies ahead of time - so if it later meets the real virus, it can react much faster.
There are also viruses that specifically attack bacteria (bacteriophages) - researchers are testing them as a possible replacement for antibiotics when bacteria have become resistant.
Viruses have probably existed for as long as cells themselves - some researchers even believe part of our own genome originally came from ancient virus infections.
