Stem Cells Explained Simply
Most cells in your body have a fixed job - a skin cell stays a skin cell, a muscle cell stays a muscle cell. Stem cells are different: they're still unspecialized and can develop into many different cell types.

Where do stem cells even come from?
Right at the start, right after fertilization, an embryo consists only of these unspecialized cells - the whole body later develops from them. But adults still have stem cells too, for example in the bone marrow.
What does an adult body even need stem cells for?
To replace damaged or dead cells! Your skin and your blood, for example, constantly renew themselves - stem cells work in the background, continuously producing fresh supply.
That's why stem cells are such a big deal in medicine, right?
Exactly. In a bone marrow transplant, for example, blood stem cells are transferred to replace diseased blood-forming cells - an established treatment used for certain cancers, among other things. Researchers are working on using stem cells to repair other damaged tissues in the future too.
Embryonic stem cells can turn into practically any cell type, while adult stem cells usually only into a few related types - which is why embryonic stem cells are also the subject of ethical debate.
Umbilical cord blood from newborns also contains valuable stem cells - which is why some parents choose to have it stored for the future.
