Explosive strength explained simply

Explosive strength is not about how much force you can produce, but how fast you build it. In a jump your foot touches the ground for only about two tenths of a second. Your full maximal strength would need three to four tenths just to arrive. Whatever is ready within that short window counts - the rest comes too late.

The gap between your true maximal strength and the part of it you can call up in two tenths of a second is called the force deficit. That is exactly what jump training works on.

Why does the strongest boy in my class not jump the highest?

Because he calls up his force too slowly. Picture two people pushing a door open: one leans against it slowly, the other throws himself at it. Both are equally strong - only one is finished in time.

Can you train that?

Grandpa Theo

Yes, but differently from maximal strength. Not heavy and slow, but light and really fast: jumps, throws, sprint starts. You teach the nervous system to send the command as one sharp burst instead of letting it swell gently.

That is why sprinters and volleyball players train jumps even though it lets them lift no extra weight. They are practising the speed of the command, not its size.

Fun Fact

Fast muscle fibres contract about ten times faster than the enduring ones - and they tire just as fast. That is why a sprint is over in seconds while you can walk for hours.
