Maximal strength explained simply

Maximal strength is the greatest force your body can produce in a single effort - the squat you manage exactly once. The surprise is this: how strong you are depends not only on how thick your muscles are, but above all on how many muscle fibres your nervous system switches on at the same time.

Untrained people often activate only about two thirds of their fibres at once. The rest are there, but never called upon.

Why does the skinny man at the gym lift more than the one with the big arms?

Because strength is largely a nerve matter. His brain sends a stronger command and switches on more fibres at once. A muscle is like a choir - what counts is how many singers come in together.

So training does not build bigger muscles at all?

Grandpa Theo

It does, but in order. For the first few weeks you get stronger almost purely through better recruitment - the muscles still look the same. Only after that do they start to grow.

That is why beginners get noticeably stronger in the first four to six weeks without looking any bigger.

Fun Fact

Your body always calls up muscle fibres in the same order: the small, enduring ones first, the large, fast ones last. This is the size principle. That is why you only reach the strongest fibres with heavy loads or by training close to real exhaustion.
