Area and Volume Formulas Explained Simply

Whether it's a circle, sphere or cylinder - the formulas for circumference, area, volume and surface area are more closely related than you might think. All of them only need the radius r (and for the cylinder, also the height h). Here's everything you need for a math exam on the topic - including the mistakes that happen most often.

Circle circumference: U = 2 × π × r r is the radius - half of the diameter d!
Circle area: A = π × r²
Sphere volume: V = 4⁄3 × π × r³
Sphere surface area: O = 4 × π × r²
Cylinder volume: V = π × r² × h

Why does a sphere have almost the same formula as a circle, just with r³ instead of r²?

Because a sphere is basically a 3D circle! For an area (2D) you count r × r, for a volume (3D) you simply add one more dimension: r × r × r.

A cylinder is just a circle “stretched” upward by the height h - that's why its volume is circle area times height: π × r² × h.

What's the most common mistake people make with these problems?

Mixing up radius and diameter! If the problem gives you the diameter (e.g. d=10cm), you first have to divide by 2 to get the radius (r=5cm). If you accidentally calculate with the diameter instead, the area comes out 4 times too big, and the volume a whopping 8 times too big!

How do you even get the cylinder's surface area formula? It looks complicated.

Not as hard as it looks: imagine peeling the label off a can and laying it flat - that's a rectangle! Its width is the circle's circumference (2×π×r) and its height is h. Add the two round lids on top and bottom (2×π×r²) and you get exactly that formula.

Take a bicycle wheel with diameter d=60cm, so r=30cm. Circumference U = 2×π×30 ≈ 188.5cm - that's how far the wheel travels in exactly one turn! Its area would be A = π×30² ≈ 2827 cm².

Example 1: Full cylinder (a can, r=3.5cm, h=12cm)

Volume: V = π × 3.5² × 12 ≈ 462 cm³
Surface area: O = 2 × π × 3.5 × (3.5+12) ≈ 2 × π × 3.5 × 15.5 ≈ 340.8 cm²

Example 2: Full sphere (a soccer ball, r≈11cm)

Volume: V = 4⁄3 × π × 11³ ≈ 5575 cm³ (over 5.5 liters of air!)
Surface area: O = 4 × π × 11² ≈ 1521 cm² - roughly the leather area the ball is stitched from.

Example 3: Your turn

A pizza has a diameter of 32cm. What's its area?
Watch the trap: first divide d=32cm by 2! r=16cm, then A = π × 16² ≈ 804 cm²

π (Pi) is approximately 3.14159 - the formulas are exact only for perfect circles, spheres and cylinders; real objects are always just approximations of them. Always watch your units in exams: areas are given in cm²/m², volumes in cm³/m³.
