Why There Are Biologically Two Sexes

Biologically, an organism's sex isn't defined by appearance or behavior, but by the type of reproductive cell (gamete) it produces. And in sexual reproduction, there are only two types.

Why exactly two sexes, and not three or four? More variety in reproduction doesn't sound like a bad thing at first.

Good question - biologists have actually worked this out with evolutionary models. Right at the start of evolution, all gametes were the same size. But two competing strategies for success emerged: produce lots of tiny, mobile gametes that reach as many other gametes as possible - or produce fewer large gametes packed with nutrients that give offspring a good start.

So why didn't a medium size win out as a compromise?

Because medium-sized gametes lose on both counts: they're too big and slow to reach many partners, but too small to give offspring enough nutrients. The two extremes - tiny-and-mobile and huge-and-nutrient-rich - had the evolutionary advantage, so those two strategies are the ones that ended up winning out and staying stable. This holds true for practically all sexually reproducing plants, animals, and fungi.

Is that the same as the X and Y chromosomes we already talked about, in our case as humans?

Important distinction: X and Y are just the mechanism that determines which gamete type develops in humans - not the sex itself. Other species use different mechanisms: birds and butterflies have a reversed system (ZW), in some reptiles temperature inside the egg decides, and clownfish can even switch roles during their lifetime. The mechanism varies a lot - but the outcome is almost everywhere the same: egg cell or sperm, nothing in between.

Biological variation within the system

Even though there are only two gamete types, an individual body's development can play out in many ways: in intersex people, rare variations in chromosomes, hormones, or development lead to physical traits that don't fit neatly into the usual pattern. This doesn't contradict the two-gamete-type split, but it does show that physical development along this system can vary.

This explanation deliberately sticks to the biological definition based on gamete type, as used in evolutionary biology - a narrow scientific concept that doesn't cover social or personal questions around gender.
