Rivers as Ecosystems Explained Simply
A river isn't a single uniform ecosystem - it changes dramatically along its path from source to mouth. Temperature, current, and the living things found there all change right along with it.
Near the source, the water is cold and fast; near the mouth, it's wider, warmer, and slower - very different conditions on one and the same river.

Why do trout usually live further upstream?
Because cold, fast-flowing water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm, slow-moving water - and trout need a lot of it. Upstream near the source is exactly where they find those conditions.
And why does a river always seem to get wider toward its mouth?
Along the way, lots of small streams and tributaries flow in, so the volume of water keeps growing. At the same time, the slope gets flatter, the water flows more slowly, and it deposits the mud and sand it's been carrying.
Why is the mouth of a river often such a special habitat?
That's where fresh water from the river meets salt water from the sea and mixes - that's called brackish water. Only a few especially adaptable species can handle the constantly changing salt levels, but in return, lots of young fish and birds find plenty of food there.
Salmon are born in fresh water, spend most of their lives in the sea, and then swim upstream against the current back to the exact river where they hatched to spawn there themselves.
Because conditions along a river change so much, a single river is often home to an astonishing variety of differently adapted species.
