DNA Explained Simply

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the blueprint for every living thing. It's packed into almost every cell in your body and contains all the information needed to build and run your body.

The order of the four bases A, T, G, and C is like a text written with only four letters. Certain stretches of that sequence are called genes - each gene is basically the blueprint for a specific protein your body needs.

Why do the bases always pair up A with T and G with C - never any other way?

Grandpa Theo

Because the shape of the bases only fits together that way, like puzzle pieces. That's really handy: when DNA copies itself for cell division, each strand automatically "knows" which matching strand needs to be built next to it, thanks to that fixed pairing.

Not just theory

A DNA test between siblings often shows surprisingly big differences: each child gets a fresh mix of DNA from mom and dad, so siblings look similar but not identical (except identical twins).

DNA and genes don't decide everything on their own - your environment (diet, experiences, lifestyle) also influences which genes actually get "read".
