Chloroplasts Explained Simply

Chloroplasts are tiny components inside plant cells - think of them as little solar power plants. They contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which captures sunlight.

6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂ carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose and oxygen using light energy (photosynthesis)

The sun symbol represents the light energy that's "captured" inside the chloroplast and converted into chemical energy.

Why are plants actually green and not some other color?

Grandpa Theo

Because the chlorophyll in chloroplasts absorbs red and blue light very well, but hardly absorbs green light at all. So the green light gets reflected back - and that's exactly what we see.

And what does the plant do with the light it captures?

Grandpa Theo

It uses the light energy to build glucose - its own "food" - out of carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil. Oxygen, which we need to breathe, is produced as a byproduct.

So basically every leaf produces its own oxygen?

Grandpa Theo

Exactly - every single leaf contains millions of chloroplasts. Almost all the oxygen in our atmosphere ultimately comes from this exact process - plants and algae have been producing it for billions of years.

A surprising origin

Chloroplasts were probably once independent bacteria that got absorbed by a larger cell a very long time ago and have lived as "roommates" inside plant cells ever since - they even still have their own tiny bit of genetic material.

Without photosynthesis in chloroplasts, there would be neither plant-based food nor enough oxygen to breathe - almost all life on Earth ultimately depends on it.
