Bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms - unlike viruses, they're clearly alive: they have their own metabolism and can reproduce entirely on their own.
As simple as this splitting looks - it's exactly why bacteria can multiply so rapidly in a short time.

Aren't bacteria just disease-causing germs?
Quite the opposite! Only a small fraction of bacteria make you sick. Most are harmless or even genuinely helpful - your gut alone hosts trillions of bacteria that help you digest food.
What's actually different about them compared to our own cells?
Our cells have a nucleus that encloses the genetic material - bacterial cells don't. In them, the genetic material just floats freely inside the cell. That's why bacteria are called "prokaryotes", meaning "before the nucleus".
And why do antibiotics eventually stop working properly?
Because bacteria multiply so fast, random mutations also pop up quickly. If one happens to protect against an antibiotic, that particular bacterium survives the treatment and keeps reproducing - a direct example of natural selection.
Bacteria are also in yogurt, cheese, and sauerkraut - there they deliberately turn milk sugar or cabbage into lactic acid, which changes taste and shelf life.
That's why it's important to always finish a full course of antibiotics: stopping too early leaves exactly the toughest, most resistant bacteria behind to survive.
